2023 Supply River Mill Pinot Noir $55 (min. order box of 6 bottles $330)
An elegant, alluring wine. The 2023 Supply River Mill Vineyard Pinot Noir has vibrant hues of ruby shot with hints of violet. The bouquet is an enticing mix of dark fruits, crushed hay and forest floor. The primary palette is of blackberries, with complex savoury notes beneath, mushroom, lavender, dried herbs. There is silk to the mouthfeel, and the tannins are mild. Delicious to drink now.
+Viticulture
2500 Pinot Noir vines are planted on 0.7 hectare, at close intervals of roughly 1.5 by 1.5 m. Fruit harvested from the Dijon Pinot Noir clones 777, 114 and 115 was primarily used in making this wine, supplemented by a small quantity from the Swiss D2V5 clone. Pruning, canopy management, fruit thinning and picking are all done by hand. The vines were not irrigated.
+ Winemaking
Only the best two-tonnes of fruit is used for our single-site Pinot Noir. Fruit intensity is key with the emphasis on small bunches. The 777, 114 and 115 clones were picked on 25 March. Clones were vinified in small batches. The select fruit then had eleven months élevage (French oak, 35% new barrique from Taransaud) before careful blending.
The 777 clone adds the prettiness of wild strawberry to the denser fruit flavours of the 114 and 115 clones, giving layers of silky tannin. The wine is unfined and unfiltered. Bottling was in February 2024.
